Minorities and Philosophy (MAP)

UNC Charlotte Chapter

Mission Statement

MAP (Minorities and Philosophy) is a multi-institutional network of scholars working to uplift underrepresented voices in philosophy. Our chapter at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte looks to add to this cause by maintaining these virtues as foundational to our organization as time passes: meaningful diversity of bodies and perspectives in philosophy; opposition to non-performative diversity and inclusion measures; and the intentional application of these values to decisions about group composition, speaker invitations, and event topics. Finally, we commit ourselves to creating a space that centers and affirms the bodies and perspectives of marginalized people within professional philosophy. We encourage graduate and undergraduate students to participate in the UNC Charlotte MAP chapter.

What We Do

We are committed to engaging in a range of activities in order to support and uplift underrepresented voices in philosophy. Programming includes brown bag lunches with professors to discuss navigating the discipline and profession, film screenings and discussions, and a reading group that is accessible and uplifts historically marginalized voices. Other endeavors we aim for include bringing underrepresented philosophical speakers to campus; supporting students that need financial assistance for conferences, the GRE, and school applications; and a project to support diversifying syllabi.
