Mariana Ortega on Aesthetic Memory: January 24

Mariana Ortega, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Penn State, will give a talk on January 24 from 2:30-4:00pm at the UNC Charlotte Atkins Library (Halton Reading Room). In her talk—titled “Memento Vivere: Shadow Ground, Aesthetic Memory, and the Border”—she will discuss the production of spaces of mourning in connection to memory practices—not for the dead but for the living. By using the example of the work of Verónica G. Cárdenas, an artist from the border-town of McAllen, Texas, specifically her series Traveling Soles, Ortega will call for aesthetic memory as a way to honor all of those immigrants who have become invisible as humans and hypervisible as ‘criminals.’ This event includes an exhibit of Cárdenas’s series in the gallery space on the first floor of the Atkins Library.
